Off-the-shelf, naturally available organocatalysts for the synthesis of cyclic organic carbonate
Abstract:
Two-component catalyst systems composed of hydrogen bond donors and
nucleophiles have been applied in the metal free catalytic reaction between carbon dioxide
and epoxide to afford cyclic carbonate under mild condition and with low catalyst loading.
The hydrogen bond donors were selected among a pool of non-toxic, renewable and
available-in-nature compounds displaying hydroxyl groups. When used in combination with
organic nucleophiles under mild conditions they displayed high activity and selectivity
providing good to high yields of cyclic carbonates. This work represents a rare example of
organocatalysts able to promote the conversion of CO2 under ambient conditions. Overall, the
reaction constitutes a green, facile, effective and industrially applicable pathway for
transforming carbon dioxide to value-added chemicals.
