Retrofit of Distillation System in Mixed-Xylene Separation Process
Abstract:
Distillation columns are the most widely used separation units in the petrochemical andchemical industries. In order to reduce their significant energy consumption there havebeen several successful ways. In this research two scenarios were used to improveenergy efficiency of process which are improving heat integration of the existingprocess using Pinch analysis and modifying column arrangement into complexdistillation arrangements. Mixed-Xylene Separation Process was investigated here as acase study. HYSYS 2.4.1 software and ASPEN PLUS 10.2 were used as simulationtools and HX-NET was also used to analyze heat recovery system of the process basedon Pinch Analysis.The results of the first scenario have shown that the energy utilization of the existingprocess is closed to the minimum utility requirement evaluated from Pinch analysis andthere is no heat transfer across the Pinch point. For the second one, it is found thatcolumn with Side Rectifier, Prefractionantor and Petlyuk Column arrangement using theexisting columns can save the energy consumption in the columns based on the samerequired product purity up to 15.57 percent, 7.92 percent and 27.82 percent respectively.Although they can reduce energy consumption in the columns, the heat integrationpotential of the process is reduced after applying the complex distillation arrangements.For the column with Side Rectifier case, minimum-heating utility is higher than theexisting case around 74.85 percent, while 13.07 percent and 45.74 percent increases inhot utility are required if Prefractionator and Petlyuk Column arrangements are applied.Hence, for this separation task, it is not worth arranging the existing column intocomplex distillation arrangements.
