Abstract:
In order to transmit video sequences over communication networks, video coding isrequired to compress a huge size of data to be as small as possible. This can be achievedby eliminating most redundancies contained within the original video sequence. Mostpopular techniques apply transform-based coding in their compression processes. Thisspecial project proposes a method used to increase the compression ratio of the very lowbit-rate video coding scheme. The VLC coding process is modified in such a way that itgives a shorter codeword and at the same time minimizes the effects to the quality of thevideo sequence. The experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve avery similar quality, with differences hardly noticeable by the human eye, of theexisting method with fewer bits used in the compressed data. Moreover, the proposedmethod can be applied to any block-based video coding scheme.
