Abstract:
A selective encryption technique for compressed audio is proposed in this specialproject study. Instead of encrypting the entire compressed audio, the scheme encryptsthe important part contained in the side information only. An advantage over existingschemes that encrypt the entire compressed audio is reduced computation time in theencryption process while producing audio similar in quality. This special project studyemphasizes the standard ofMPEG 1 Layer III compressed audio, known as MP3, whichhas widespread adoption and is an accepted standard following ISOIIEC InternationalStandard IS 11172-3 [1]. The quality of the encrypted audio is evaluated using thesignal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and subjective quality assessment. The experiment resultsindicated that the computation times for the encryption process were reduced by99.56%. This is useful because it enables the secure transmission of compressed audiothat needs to be instantaneously encrypted before being sent through networks, such asreal time encryption for MP3 music delivery via the Internet. These proposed schemescould apply to another compressed audio standard.
