Abstract:
This paper presents the potential of using daylighting for an academic building. Electrical energy saving is investigated when using daylighting and in this case, electrical energy consumption of lighting system could save more than 50% by using daylighting. For the basis of this study, the CIE standard and Zonal Cavity method is used to analyze the amount of artificial lighting in each room to desire illumination level. DF curves of typical rooms are measured directly in typical days and analyzed from the monthly mean of hourly solar radiation of 1982-1988 which is collected at KMITT. In this building, there is a poor existing lighting systems. The majority of illumination level in typical rooms is higher than recommendation level. However, though the introduction of daylighting, it was discovered that not only could electrical lighting costs be reduced, there was also a decrease in the cooling load of the building, thus even greater energy savings are achievable through the introduction of this technology
