Effects of Disliked Gifts on Recipient ' s Behavior a cross Cultural Study
Abstract:
Not many studies look at the recipients gift-giving perspectives, although the recipients play crucial roles in the gift giving process, particularly in the process after receiving gifts. The recipients are the persons who determine the results of the gift exchange and decide what they are going to do with the gifts. Some gifts may make them happy, but some may fail to delight them.
This research aims to examine how the recipients from different culture may differ in their reaction to the disliked gifts. In addition, this research looks at how close and distant relationships will have an influence on the disliked gift exchange process. Two studies were conducted to examine the recipients behavior toward the disliked gifts using a 2 (Eastern vs. Western culture) x 2 (close vs.
distant relationship) between subject design. The results show some significant differences between Eastern and Western recipients in their behavior toward the disliked gifts when receiving the gifts from close or distant others.
