Abstract:
This research examines the sources of wastage for the sixteen types of materials mainly used in the construction of building projects. A survey was conducted to solicit opinions from three groups of professions including: civil engineers, architects, and building systems engineers, regarding the causes of material wastage as well as the necessary preventive actions associated with each cause identified. From the result, it can generally be stated that material wastage constitutes about 3.71 percent of the project costs. The causes of material wastage can be grouped into five categories. They are inadequate project planning, incomplete drawings, lack of workmanship, lack of efficient material management system, and inefficient consumption. It is also found that steel reinforcement, cement, wall and floor tiles are materials that have the highest wastage rate when compared to others.
