Abstract: In this thesis I explore the possibilities of painting as a form of intellectual inquiry. Through an extended series of paintings I attempt to critique a particular trend within globalization, the transformation of cultural icons and meanings into commodities or triggers for consumption. The methodology of the work is practice-based research, a form of inquiry that seeks to advance knowledge partly through creative production. Intellectually, my work draws on a philosophical concept, 'under erasure'. The concept, which was introduced by Heidegger and further developed by Derrida, questions the meaning of certain words using a typographic mark known as the strikethrough. This marks the word as problematic but leaves it visible. In my research I seek to extend this concept to painting and through this to explore and evaluate the potential of under erasure as a creative and critical device. Put simply, base photographs of cultural artifacts are placed under erasure through the application of layers of paint that obscure some parts of the image whilst leaving others visible. I conclude that painting is a valid form of research when it is theorized, contextualized and critically evaluated through reflective and analytical writing.
