Teacher identification of errors to help young learners correct their spelling
Abstract:
This study was undertaken to find out whether using teacher identification of spelling
errors could help the young learners to self-correct their own writing, and to investigate
what resources the young learners used while doing self-correction.
The subjects of the study were eight students in Grade 4 of Sombunwit Trilingual
School. There were two boys and six girls. Their ages were between 9-11 years old.
Two kinds of research instruments were used. The first one was 2 drafts of 64 written
pieces from 8 tasks. And the second one is semi-structured interviews.
The findings of the study showed that after using teacher identification of errors in
correcting learners' writing focusing on spelling, the learners showed improvement in
ability to self-correct, but only on the local errors, not the syntax errors. It was also
found that the learners used the dictionary to help them self-correct the most; however,
using a dictionary could not totally help the young learners to be successful in errorcorrection.
The implications of the study focus on introducing self-correction for young
learners and teaching young learners how to use a dictionary.
