Process layout improvement using systematic layout planning and simulation techniques
Abstract:
This research aims to propose a new layout of Pre MRB process of selected hard disk drive factory in order to reduce material handling distance between workstations, reduce a number of work in process (WIP), and increase its capability. A systematic layout planning (SLP) technique which considers relationships among all activities is applied in order to determine the appropriate location and distance. Four alternative layouts are proposed based on SLP and the layout with shortest material handling distance is recommended. The proposed layout is evaluated using simulation technique based on key performance indices which are number of WIP and capability. The results show that the proposed layout can reduce the total distance from 1,383.19 meters to 1,127.97 meters or reducing of 18.45%. In addition, the number of WIP can be reduced from 18,506 pieces per day to 13,264 pieces per day or reducing of 28.33% and the capability can be increased from 96,852 pieces per day to 107,790 pieces per day or it can be increased of 11.29%.
