Analyses of move pattern, tense, and voice of published research article abstracts in linguistics and applied linguistics
Abstract:
The purposes of this study were to investigate move patterns, types of opening
sentences, verb tense, and voice of published research article abstracts in linguistics
and applied linguistics. Swales and Freak (2009) five-moved-pattern was used to
identify move. Two corpora of published research article abstracts in the field of
linguistics and applied linguistics were randomly selected of 25 each from several
scholarly journals. The findings in terms of move pattern revealed that move2-move3-
move4-move5 pattern occurred the most frequency in linguistics and move2-move3-
move4 pattern occurred the most frequency in applied linguistics. Furthermore,
move2, move3, and move4 tended to be obligatory moves in both fields. Regarding
the four types of opening sentences appeared that linguistics and applied linguistics
tended to use type C in their opening sentences. Regarding verb tense and voice, it
revealed that past simple tense and present simple tense tended to be used most in
both field. In addition, linguistics and applied linguistics tended to use active voice in
reporting their research article abstracts.
