Problems and Needs of English Language Communication by Support Staff at Buriram Rajabhat University
Abstract:
This research was carried out at Buriram Rajabhat University (BRU)in Buriram,
Thailand to investigate problems and needson English language used and to explore the
needs for an English training course which support staff want to attend. The samples
comprised 266 BRU support staff working as permanent staff. The study used a
questionnaire to gather quantitative data and also a semi-structured interview to add a
qualitative dimension. The collected data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, mean
and standard deviation.
The findings were as follows:
1. The findings highlighted the importance of listening as a moderately needed
English language skill, followed by speaking, reading, and writing.
2. The limited vocabulary was the most problematic skill for support staff when
using English, while the least problematic skill was writing. The other problematic
English skills were speaking, listening and reading, in declining order.
3. When considering the need for English training, the support staff indicated
that they felt a general English conversation conversation course, a vocabulary course and
English listening course would encourage support staff to develop the English language skills
necessary for their work.
The research findings provide some useful suggestions for improving the work
Effectiveness of Buriram Rajabhat University support staff as well as providing some
guidelines for designing effective English training courses.
