Abstract:
In this project, a utilizing of spent catalyst from Fluidized Catalytic Cracking Unit (FCCU) of Thai Oil Refinery as material to produce concrete brick was studied. The spent catalyst was used as a cementitious material and mixed with Portland cement type I, sand and crushed stone to form concrete brick. The amount of FCCU spent catalyst in concrete brick was varied as 0 percent, 10 percent, 20 pcrccnt and 30 pcrcent by wcigllt of ccmcntitious material (Portland cement type I plus spent catalyst) and water-ccmentitious material ratio was also varied as 0.30, 0.35 and 0.40. The con~pressive strength of the concrete brick containing spent catalyst was testcd at the age of 1, 3, 7, 14, 28 and 60 days of curing while the water absorption was tested at thc age of 28 days. The mix proportion of concrete brick for producing the paving block was also investigated in this experiment. The mix proportioil of cement and crushed stone were kept constant while the sand and the speilt catalyst content in paving block was varied in 3 mix proportions. The conlpressive strength of the block was tested at the age 7, 28 and 60 days of curing. The results from the investigation showed that the compressive strength of concrete brick increased with the ages, conversely, it decreased with the increasing of the spent catalyst content in concrete brick. The experimental results also , indicated that the water-cementitious material ratio of 0.4 was sufficient for mixing material and producing the highest compressive strength of concrete brick. As the results, the cement brick and brick containing 10 perceilt and 20 percent of spent catalyst as cementitious material can be used as brick grade A-2 while brick containiilg 30 perceilt of spent catalyst as cementitious material can be used as brick grade B-2. The spent catalyst content in the concrete brick can be increased up to 40 percent or 50 percent for concrete brick grade C-2 because this type of concrete brick requires low compressive strength. Finally, the experimeiltal result discovered that the paving block with 20 percent of spent catalyst by weight of cementitious material gave the compressive strength of 406 ksc at the age of 28 days. It indicated that the concrete block containing spent catalyst can be used as paving block by selecting the suitable mix proportion.
