Enhancing Performance of Video Coding Schemes Using Wavelet Packet Transform
Abstract:
Commonly, video coding methods are required for practical transmitting the videosequences through the limited bandwidth of communication networks by reducing thevideos size as much as possible without having any effects to the quality of thedecoded images. Such methods can be achieved by eliminating the redundanciescontained within the video sequences. Transform-based coding is one of the mostpopular methods to be used in practice. Most of video coding schemes implementdiscrete cosine transform as their transform. Instead of employing such transform, thenew video coding standard schemes implement discrete wavelet transform regarding topowerful properties of wavelet-based transform. The use of wavelet packet transform invideo coding schemes is proposed in this special research in order to enhance theperformance of the existing video coding schemes. To evaluate the performance of theproposed methods, the standard H.263+ based coding scheme is used and the results arecompared with the proposed one. The experimental results show significantimprovement, in terms of output bit-rate. Although the quality of the resultant imageframes obtained is lower than the originals, it is considered to be in an acceptable range, judged by human eye.
