Abstract:
This research aims to minimize fuel gas consumption in the incinerator at BangkokSynthetics Co. Ltd. (BST) whose values have been above the design value in thesecouple years. Thermodynamic incineration models representing fuel gas consumptionwere developed for all 3-operation periods of incinerator; start-up, warm-up, and normaloperation period; based on mass and energy conservation. The obtained thermodynamicincineration models were represented as functions of solid waste load, liquid wasteflowrate, retention time, set point temperature, and the percentage of excess air. Afterverifying the thermodynamic incineration models with test run data, the developedmodel could be used to estimate the fuel gas consumption within 10 percent error of themeasurement.To determine the optimum operating conditions of the incinerator, the wastemanagement model was developed and LINGO was used as an optimization tool. Theobjective function was derived based on the obtained thermodynamic incinerationmodel and also related to the amount of waste and time for waste combustion. By usingthe optimization program, the optimum operating conditions and the combustion timefor each waste type were obtained. In a case study, the waste data in November 2001was optimized based on one month and it was found that solid and liquid waste shouldbe fed separately into the incinerator at a small amount of waste and fed simultaneouslyat a large amount of waste. Moreover, waste from BST was managed to burn in 2 daysusing the obtained thermodynamic incineration models and the developed wastemanagement program. It was found that the fuel gas consumption from optimizationprogram is deviated 17.67 percent from actual operation. This means thethermodynamic incineration model and waste management program could be acceptableand used in real. By considering waste data in November 2001, it was found that fuelgas consumption for waste burning in the incinerator could be reduced from the usualcondition about 70 ton/month or the income from more fuel gas selling could beincreased up to 350,000 baht/month.
