Abstract:
Function Based Reasoning and Qualitative Reasoning are techniques forimplementing systems or devices which are capable of reasoning similar to that of human. Infunction based approach, reasoning is based on functions of each component in the system.Qualitative Reasoning is concerned with reasoning or explaining behavior of a system in non-numerical terms that are extracted from human experience and common sense. This thesis describes the implementation of a system which utilizes the abovetechniques in simulation of Ayuddhayas water conservancy. Ayuddhaya is indeed a city with ahistorical significance in Thailand. The system is implemented using a software package knownas Visual Basic Version 4.0. Quantitative values, used in water conservancys equations, weretransformed into qualitative values. These qualitative values were extracted by means ofsurveying the opinions from experts and professionals in the field. The system was also validated by a group of people mentioned above. It revealed theability to reason qualitatively, to simulate and changes which may occur and suggested thedirection for future development. This research is the first to study the possibility ofimplementing a control system which utilizes the two techniques mentioned above.
