Abstract:
The purpose of th~s classroom-based research study was to find out howstudents would react-to finding known words in new contexts.The subjects in the experiment were two M.4 students in the ArtsProgramme at the Islamic College of Thailand. Data were collected from thestudents' daries, the teachers' chary, the students' vocabulary portfolios and aquestionnaire.After the students had selected five words fkom each of 6 classroom lessons,they would find out how the words chosen were used in different contexts bybrowsing through three student newspapers. The students worked on their own andconducted their vocabulary search based on six topics chosen from their textbooks.The findings of this study reveal that the students were able to extend thevocabulary which they already knew into new contexts. In addition, the subject whowas teacher-centered changed to become student-centered, while the subject whowas student-centered remained consistent. Both subjects gabel several ben&ts fiamthis study, including knowledge of morphology, enrichment of their knowledge ofsingle words they already knew, learning additional meanings from new contexts,and development of their dictionary skills.The reasons contributmg to the success of the study include the relevance ofthe activity to the students' needs, their positive motivation, the appropriateness ofthe materials and the teacher's fircilitating role.
