Abstract: The effects of controlled atmosphere (CA), temperature and packaging on quality and storage life of sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) were investigated. Three experiments were conducted. The CA experiment conducted with high CO2 (5, 10 and 15%) and low O2 in combination with high CO2 (1.5% O2 combined with 0, 5, 10 and 15% CO2) at 13 ?C, 90-95% RH. CA of 1.5% O2 with 0% CO2 was found to be the best treatment in maintaining quality and prolonging the storage life to 24 days instead of 10 days in normal air. High CO2 storage at 15% rapidly induced CO2 injury on and shortened storage life to 4 days. The CO2 injury can be reduced by combination with low O2. In the second experiment, the effects of storage temperature of 7, 10, 12, 15, 20 and 25?C were examined. Storage temperature at 15?C was found to be the optimum temperature prolonging storage life to 14 days. Chilling injury was induced when stored between 7-12 ?C and most severe at 7?C which storage life was shorten to 4 days. In the third experiment, effects of different packaging were determined. It was found that polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) bags were more effective in maintaining quality and increasing shelf life by at least two times the shelf life compared with the other packaging methods (2-5 days). Shelf life of sweet basil held in PE bag was 10 days while in PP bag was 14 days.
