Abstract:
This classroom-based research study is an investigation into the effects of using awareness-raising discussion prompts to change students' attitudes towards speaking English. The awareness-raising discussion prompts consist of questions which provide an opportunity for students to think back carefully about their speaking while completing non-threatening activities. These non-threatening activities are materials which aim to change students' attitudes towards speaking. They are used as a device to help the students to express their ideas. The study was carried out with four first-year Production Engineering students of King Mongut's Institute of Technology Thonburi, taking LNG 101: General English for Science and Technology as a compulsory course. They were asked to participate in the experiment while they were attending their regular class. The data were collected from awareness transcriptions, activity transcriptions, students' diaries, questionnaires and observation sheets. The results of the investigation show that awareness-raising and non-threatening activities can change students' attitudes towards speaking. If students are aware of their positive linguistic competence, communication strategies and cooperation between learners, they can improve their ability in speaking, and this can affect their attitudes towards speaking positively as well.
