Abstract:
This thesis presents a method of static analysis to determine equilibriumconfigurations of extensible marine cables in polar coordinates in which theeffect of axial deformation and Poisson s ratio are considered. Two physicalcases are considered : the top tension is given while the total unstretched cablelength is unknown and vice versa. The forces acting on cable are effectivetension, effective weight, and hydrodynamic forces. To solve the problem, work-energy functional of the extensible marinecables is formulated. For stable equilibrium, the first variation of the functional isvanished. Since the problem is nonlinear, the finite element method and theNewton - Raphson iterative process is used to solve it .This analysis can be used for extensible marine cables in whichthe horizontal line lay-out at the sea surface and the angle between the tworadial line is not rectangular. The results of this study are compared with theprevious study and they are found to be in a very good agreement.
