Abstract:
Purpose of Study 1. To study duties and responsibilities of the head department in the central teachers colleges, 2.To study duties and responsibilities of the head department, both the actual and the expected of the sample population in the central teachers colleges. 3. To describe duties and responsibilities of the head department in teachers colleges. Procedures To get the research frame, theoretical concepts and real situations in teachers colleges were first studied. Then research instruments were constructed, tried out, and revised. These field research instruments consist of interviews and questionnaires used for soliciting the sample populations opinion about actual and expected duties and responsibilities of the head department. The interviews were used with 35 administrators, and the questionnaires were distributed to 126 department heads and 268 college instructors in the central teachers colleges. Data were collected, analysed and presented in terms of percentage, means, standard deviation, t-test and analysis of variance. The results of the research were summarized and them the job description of the head department were delineated. Findings The findings from the research are as follows:- 1. The important duties and responsibilities of the head department in the central teachers colleges are academic affairs, personnel administration, student affairs, public relation, and business and general administration. 2. The research results indicated that the actual performs of the head department are as follows (a) business and general administration, (b) academic affairs, (c) personnel administration, (d) student affairs, and (e) public relation. According to the expected performs of the head department, they are: (a) business and general administration, (b) academic affairs, (c) personnel administration, (d) public relation, and (e) student affairs. The comparison of the actual and the expected performances indicated that they are different in every affair. 3. Specific tasks to be performed are as follows: formulated policies, projects planning, controlling and co - ordinating the department activities, personnel planning and administration, job assignment and scheduling, and undergoing college instructors development program, coordination extra curricular activities, student enrollment planning, writing articles for public , planning other department activities and budgeting.
