Abstract:
A solar collector designed for heating air to a high temperature in a tropical climate with a relatively large fraction of diffuse solar radiation has been made and tested. It has non-concentrating compound parabolic reflectors with total aperture area 1.44 m2 and a non-selective flat plate receiver with area 0.48 m2 making a concentration radio approximately 3.0. The collector parameters found by transient tests were an optical efficiency of about 0.7, a heat loss coefficient of about 5 W/m2K, and a heat capacity of about 1.3 kJ/m2K. During the test, which used recirculated air at high flow rates of 1 and 2 kg/s, the temperature reached was about 70ํC (40ํC above ambient temperature) with the solar radiation intensity about 600-900 W/m2
