Bridge the gap : what have been missing in an EFL class?
Abstract:
The objective of was to examine the extent to which cultural capital, as
Bourdieu argues, individual students bring to the class has an effect upon their
English as a foreign language(EFL) learning; and what types of cultural capital they
perceive as their cultural capital for their learning success/ The data gained from
interviews with university students, together with class observation and document
analysis show that cultural capital has an influence on the course of the informants'
EFL learning. Educational background in the English subject, the language
proficiency, and supportive environment from the family are considered as types of
cultural capital differentiating the achievements in English. The findings suggest the
interrelationship between the learners' cultural worlds and the institutionalized
discourse of language learning. Based on the findings, the paper provides suggestions
on how to minimize such a gap for classroom teachers and educators. This paper
offers alternative perspectives for successful language learning.
