Abstract:
Cyperenic Acid (C₁₅H₂₂O₂) crystallizes as colourless and transparent geometrical form in the orthorhombic system, space group P₂₁₂₁₂₁. The unit cell dimensions were obtained from power X-ray diffraction by Guinier-Hägg camera and refined by least-squares method. The cel dimensions are a = 8.1244±0.0019 Å, b = 12.3664±0.0025 Å, c = 27.6717±0.0077 Å, (V) 2779.9 (Å)³, (Dm) = 1.120 gm.cm⁻³, z = 8 formula units/until cell, Dx 1.119 gm.cm⁻³, and the linear absorption coefficient μCuKα = 5.69 cm⁻¹. Copper Kα (λ = 1.5418 Å) radiation with Weissenberg multiple films technique and the precession method were used to record 1414 independent reflections from the crystal. The intensities were measured visually, and corrected for absorption and Lorentz-polarization factor. The Direct Methods were employed to compute the probable structure of cyperenic acid. MULTAN 80, comprising NORMAL, MULTAN, EXFFT and SEARCH programs, at this stage led to a probable fragment of the structure with some indication that the orientation of the molecular axes is probably parallel to the a-axis. Further computation to elucidate to whole structure of the compound remains to be done.
