Abstract:
Highway Engineering Design involved consideral amount of survey data especially the one with several alternative arrangements. The bigger the project, the more work and the more need of survey data for alignment design with the help of computer programe, all there work can be reduced considerably. This thesis involved the studies of MOSS program. The MOSS is the latest program ever developed by using string concept to generate the digital terrain model. Program can be divided in four parts : survey, design, analysis, and visualization. In Mr. Vacharlin Kasaluk's Thesis, Chulalongkorn University, 1987, the analysis and visualization of such programe were presented and for this thesis, the remaining two parts, survey and design were studied. The survey data and alignment design of Patalung-Trung highway, chainage 37+425 to 38+825, from Department of Highway, were used as a case study to determine the efficiency and capability of the program. Program can analyze all kinds of ground survey data. The chainage and offset survey data, which are usually used in Thailand. Therefore the modification of the program was made to covert chainage offset to coordinated survey. The weak point of program to analyze ground survey data is that it can not calculate and adjust triangulation. In highway engineering design; program can be used to design conventional alignment, which is consisted of circular and transition curve, effectively. It can also be used to design cubic spline alignment. The cubic spline alignment design will make the conventional alignment design out-of-date especially in the constrain of higher geography area. The computer program is only assisting in design. The designer has to sketch the element of alignment by himself. Not only in highway engineering design, but MOSS can be also used in other fields, which need data in form of three dimensions; such as public facility net work, airport, water resources, mining and etc.
