An experimental study of the role of extensive reading on the ability to acquire vocabulary and the motivation of M.5 students at Thawangphapittayakom School in Nan province

Abstract: Purpose of the Study This research investigated the effectiveness of the extensive reading programme in teaching English reading comprehension at upper secondary level in the school system in Thailand Procedure The subjects of this research are 60 M.5 students studying in the science programme at Thawangphapittayakom School in Nan province. The subjects were divided into two groups of 30 students. The first group, the control group was taught by the intensive reading programme while the experimental group was taught by the extensive reading programme. The tools employed in this research were the passive and active vocabulary test which was written and adapted by the researcher to evaluate subjects ability to acquire English vocabulary in both groups. The test consisted of passive and active vocabulary with 80 questions. The reliability of this vocabulary test was at 0.82. The scores obtained from the pretest and the posttest of the control and the experimental groups were analyzed and administered to find out the effectiveness of these two teaching techniques. A rating- scale questionnaire was also employed to investigate students attitudes in the experimental group towards the extensive reading programme and in the control group towards the intensive reading programme at the end of the experiment. The first part contained the items concerning subjects personal data. The second was employed to elicit students attitudes and suggestions towards the use of the two teaching techniques in English reading comprehension Findings: 1. The mean scores of the posttest of students in the experimental group taught by the extensive reading programme were significantly higher than those of the pretest. 2. There was a significant difference between scores gained from the passive and active vocabulary pretest and the passive and active vocabulary posttest for students in the control group taught by the use of the intensive reading programme. 3. It was found that the posttest scores obtained by students in the experimental group taught by the use of the extensive reading programme were significantly higher than the posttest scorcs obtanined by students in the control group taught by the use of the intensive reading programme. 4. The mean scores of all students questionnaire revealed that students both in the experimental group and in the control group agreed with using the extensive reading programme in English reading comprehension significantly.

Abstract: วัตถุประสงค์ของการวิจัย การวิจัยครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาผลของการใช้ วิธีการสอนแบบเลือกอ่านตามความสนใจในการสอนภาษาอังกฤษ ในระดับมัธยมศึกษาตอนปลายในโรงเรียนรัฐบาลของไทย วิธีดำเนินการวิจัย ตัวอย่างประชากรที่ใช้ในการวิจัยครั้งนี้คือ นักเรียน ชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 5 แผนกวิทยาศาสตร์ของโรงเรียนท่าวังผา พิทยาคม จำนวน 60 คน โดยผู้วิจัยได้แบ่งกลุ่มประชากรออก เป็น 2 กลุ่ม กลุ่มละ 30 คน กลุ่มแรกเป็นกลุ่มควบคุมที่ได้รับ การสอนโดยใช้ The extensive reading programme กับกลุ่มทดลองที่ได้รับการสอนโดยใช้ The intensive reading programme เครื่องมือที่ใช้ในการวิจัยได้แก่ข้อสอบวัดความรู้ในเรื่อง คำศัพท์ทั้ง passive และ active vocabulary ซึ่งผู้วิจัยได้ จัดทำขึ้นเพื่อใช้วัดความรู้ในเรื่องคำศัพท์ภาษาอังกฤษของกลุ่ม ประชากรทั้งสองกลุ่มก่อนการทดลองและภายหลังการทดลองซึ่ง ประกอบด้วยคำศัพท์กลุ่ม passive จำนวน 40 ข้อ และคำศัพท์ กลุ่ม active จำนวน 40 ข้อ โดยข้อสอบชุดนี้มีค่าความเชื่อถือ ได้มีระดับ 82 คะแนนที่ได้จากการสอบก่อนการทดลอง และหลัง การทดลองของกลุ่มประชากรทั้งสองกลุ่มจะถูกนำมาวิเคราะห์ เปรียบเทียบเพื่อศึกษาประสิทธิภาพของวิธีการสอนแต่ละวิธี ดังกล่าว ในการทำวิจัยครั้งนี้ผู้วิจัยยังได้ทำแบบสอบถามเพื่อวัด ทัศนคติของประชากรทั้งสองกลุ่มที่มีต่อการสอนทั้งสองวิธีแล้ว นำมาเปรียบเทียบกับแบบสอบถามประกอบด้วยส่วนสำคัญ 2 ส่วน ส่วนแรกเป็นการสอบถามข้อมูลส่วนบุคคลทั่วไป ส่วนที่สองเป็น แบบสอบถามเพื่อประเมินทัศนคติของกลุ่มประชากรทั้งสองกลุ่ม ที่มีต่อการเรียนการสอนทั้งสองแบบในการสอนอ่านภาษาอังกฤษ สรุปผลการวิจัย 1. จากการสอนอ่านภาษาอังกฤษโดยใช้ The extensive reading programme พบว่านักเรียนในกลุ่มทดลองสามารถทำ คะแนนในข้อสอบวัดความรู้ในเรื่องคำศัพท์เพิ่มขึ้นอย่างมีนัย สำคัญทางสถิติจากการเปรียบเทียบกับคะแนนที่ได้รับก่อนการ ทดลองกับคะแนนภายหลังการทดลอง 2. จากการสอนอ่านภาษาอังกฤษโดยใช้ The intensive reading programme พบว่านักเรียนในกลุ่มควบคุมสามารถทำ คะแนนในข้อสอบวัดความรู้ในเรื่องคำศัพท์เพิ่มขึ้นได้อย่างมีนัย สำคัญทางสถิติจากการเปรียบเทียบคะแนนก่อนการทดลองกับ คะแนนหลังการทดลอง 3. จากการเปรียบเทียบคะแนนที่ได้รับจากข้อสอบวัด ความรู้ในเรื่องคำศัพท์ภายหลังการทดลองระหว่างกลุ่มควบคุม และกลุ่มทดลองพบว่าผู้เรียนในกลุ่มทดลองได้รับคะแนนจาก ข้อสอบวัดความรู้ในเรื่องคำศัพท์สูงกว่าผู้เรียนในกลุ่มควบคุม อย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ 4. จากแบบสอบถามความคิดเห็นของนักเรียนทั้งสองกลุ่ม ที่มีต่อการเรียนการอ่านภาษาอังกฤษทั้งสองวิธีภายหลังสิ้นสุด การทดลองพบว่านักเรียนทั้งสองกลุ่มเห็นด้วยกับการได้เลือก อ่านตามความสนใจซึ่งก็หมายถึงการเรียนการสอนโดยใช้วิธี การสอนอ่านแบบเลือกอ่านตามความสนใจหรือ The extensive reading programme
