Abstract:
The purposes of this research were to extract the pigment from henna leaves and to develop eyebrows product containing henna leaves extract. The contained pigment in henna leaves were extracted with 3 different solvents; distilled water, ethanol and 50% ethanol in distilled water. The extract had brown-orange color and 50% ethanol in distilled water showed strongest in color and highest percentage yield with 1.92%. The extract showed maximum absorption wavelength at 214 nm. Then, gel base with suitable viscosity, film and eyebrow shaping was prepared and various concentrations (5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30%) of henna leaves extract were added to the gel formula. It was found that the gel color was intensified according to the increasing of extract concentration and formula 9, which contained 30% extract, showed enhanced eyebrow color to natural brown when applied to the eyebrows. To determine stability of formula 9, the product was stored in heating and cooling for 6 cycles and stored at different temperatures; 4, 45 °C and room temperature for 1 month. The results showed that the formulations were slightly changed throughout the experiment. Therefore, the developed formula was classified as stable formula. Irritation was investigated by single patch test at the forearm of 20 volunteers and the results show no irritation. Performance of eyebrows gel with henna leaves extract was evaluated in comparison to a product from the market. It was found that the volunteers satisfied with drying time, eyebrows color and water proof properties of developed eyebrows gel which was equivalent to that of a product from the market. Specifically, the volunteers are most satisfied with gel product more than product in the market.
