Abstract: Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the oldest diseases of human and it remains one of the deadliest communicable diseases and a major global health problem responsible for ill health among millions of people worldwide. Poor treatment outcomes are still of a major concern in some parts of the world especially in Africa. This study aimed to explore the factors associated with successful treatment outcomes among TB patients who completed their treatment during May and October 2015 at Mulago hospital in Kampala district, Uganda, as well as to study their knowledge, attitude and practices on TB. A case-control study of 100 subjects was conducted. Using a simple random technique, sampling of TB patients who had their treatment outcome during May to October 2015 at Mulago hospital and with written consent of subjects, face-to-face interviews were carried out at household level. Descriptive statistics and multiple logistic regression analysis were performed for descriptive data and factor association. The study comprised of 100 subjects with majority being male 56%, mean age of 30.77 years old, 57% had less than secondary education, 60% were married, 52% were HIV positive and 87% were pulmonary TB patients. After control for all possible confounders, one factor was found to be significantly associated with successful treatment outcomes. This was high level of (aOR 8.70, 95% CI, 1.22 – 61.97). Based on Chi-square at p-value ˂ 0.05, the study showed significant differences in knowledge, attitude and practices (KAP) between case and control groups, high knowledge at p-value = 0.001, good attitude at p-value = 0.003, good practices at p-value = 0.001 were seen among cases. These are important results that can be used by the national TB program and other stake holders in the fight against TB.
