Efficacy of blunt cannula subdermal hyaluronic acid injection for midface skin rejuvenation
Abstract:
Hyaluronic acid (HA) concentration in the skin is decreased with aging. A hyaluronic acid injection is a procedure of skin rejuvenation using intradermal micropuncture, generally via a sharp needle. There has not been researched on injecting hyaluronic acid using a blunt cannula for skin rejuvenation yet. The objective of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of the new injection method of subdermal hyaluronic acid via a blunt cannula for mid-face skin rejuvenation. Thai subjects, with moderate facial photoaging skin, were randomized and enrolled to treat with a subdermal injection of hyaluronic acid via a blunt cannula into both cheeks of the midface area. Subjects were followed up and assessed the outcomes at 1, 4 and 12 weeks after the treatment. The clinical assessments regarding to skin hydration, melanin index, Global Aesthetic Improvement Score (GAIS), patient satisfaction and side effects, compared the facial condition between before and after injection. There were 15 subjects completed the study. The skin hydration was significantly improved after the 4th and 12th week of an injection at 0.007 and 0.003 respectively (p- value <0.05). Similarly, the melanin index was significantly improved since the 1st week of the injection at p < 0.001. The average Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale (GAIS) scores evaluated by the dermatologists were 1.09, 1.40, and 0.80 at the 1st, 4th, and 12th week, respectively. Also, GAIS evaluated by subjects themselves reported the average score were 1.07, 1.73 and 2.13 at the 1st, 4th, and 12th week, respectively. With respect to Patients Satisfaction, almost all subjects view was indicated as satisfied since the 1st week. The side effects were found only a mild degree of edema, bruise and some lump Therefore, the sub-dermal hyaluronic acid injection using a blunt canula technique can be an alternative treatment choice for facial skin rejuvenation.
