Abstract:
The objectives of this study were to classify and describe the kind of figurative
language used in Tai Orathais songs and to examine figurative language used in Tai Orathais songs by identifying its cultural and connotative meaning against the background of related ways of life. This study was used qualitative research to analyze of song lyrics. And The samples were hundreds of songs of Tai Orathai. All the songs were analytically based on two features: types of figurative language and cultural meaning. The finding showed that fifteen types of figurative language were found: Metaphor, Repetition, Assonance, Allusion, Personification, Imagery, Metonymy, Onomatopoeia, Symbolism, Alliteration, Irony, Simile, Oxymoron, Rhetorical Question and Hyperbole. The top three in the rank were Metaphor, Repetition and Assonance accounting for 31.79%, 22.14 % and 10.00% respectively. Furthermore, the songs sung by Tai Orathai
reflected social-economic conditions, life style, love and religion in Thai society. The findings of the study might help all learners to have a better understanding
of the language used and the cultural meaning in the songs. And the framework of the study can be used as a guideline in analysis of other kinds of songs based on a figurative language framework. At the same time this study gives insight into culture, idea of the singers thinking, and new experiences for listeners to consider when listening to the songs.
