Abstract:
The synthesis of zeoliteA from Thai kaolin has been studied by hydrothermal treatment with various NaOH concentrations. The process variables for synthesis have been optimized in order to produce zeoliteA at a lower price. The mole ratio of SiO2/Al2O3 for kaolin was fixed at 2.1. The NaOH concentrations and reaction times varied from 1-4 molL-1 and 1-4 hours, respectively; hydrothermal temperature was kept at 100ํC. The influence of these parameters on the percentage of zeolite crystallinity has been investigated. It was found that increasing the NaOH concentration and reaction tiom resulted in higher percentage of zeoliteA crystallinity. Metal sorption study was performed with lead. The sorption isotherm for Pb2+ exchange with sodium zeoliteA was also determined. The Pb sorption by zeoliteA was fitted well with Freundlich model. The distribution constants (k) from the Freundlich equation of kaolin and zeoliteA were 7.73*10-5 and 2.9066 mmol/g, respectively
