Abstract:
This research aimed to study the opinion of people in Bangkok Metropolis towards violence against women in the family and factors affecting opinion toward this issue. The 568 sampled population are people in the communities in Bangkok Metropolis, government officials and state enterprises officials who currently reside in Bangkok Metropolis. The sample was purposively selected through a multi stage sampling technique. The data collected by self administered questionnaires and through the interviews for those who were unable to read or write. Findings obtained from the Simple Regression Analysis revealed that respondents who were female, younger, single, had higher education, being government officials and state enterprises officials, had positive attitude toward sex role in the family, and positive attitude toward gender equality, had more knowledge and understanding of violence against women, and had greater exposure to information on family violence had a tendency not to accept violence against women in the family at a 0.05 statistical significance level. Results obtained from Multiple Regression Analysis showed that the total of 11 independent variables explained variation in opinion towards violence against women in the family about 33.1 percent. Stepwise Multiple Regression Analysis revealed that positive attitude toward gender equality could best explained the variation of opinion towards violence against women in the family (26.9 percent) followed by other 4 factors including knowledge and understanding of violence against women, education, experienced on family violence, and positive attitude toward sex role in the family, which increased the explanatory power by 1.6, 1.1, 1.1 and 0.09 percent respectively.
