English Speaking Anxiety of English Program Grade 9 Students at Burirampttayakhom School
Abstract:
The purposes of this study were: 1) to investigate the common causes of English speaking anxiety of English programs students, and. 2) to compare English speaking anxiety of English programs students in Burirampittayakom School Buriram Province, classified by program types. The samples were from three programs: 29 English Program(EP), 40 Intensive Communicative English Program(ICEP) and 50 Conversational English Program (CEP), making a total of 119. They were selected by using purposive sampling and simple random sampling. The research instrument was the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) developed by Horwitz et al. (1986). The statistics used for data analysis were mean, standard deviation, and one-way ANOVA. The results revealed that 1) the most common causes of English speaking anxiety for the three different groups of the students were they panic when they have to speak without preparation in language class; and I tremble when I know that I'm going to be called in language class and I can feel my heart pounding when I'm going to be called in language class, and 2) the three different program types of students had different English speaking anxiety with statistical significance at .05 levels. The CEP students suffered in speaking anxiety most, followed by ICEP students and EP students.
