Abstract:
The objectives of this research were to: 1) synthesize problem based learning with scaffolding to enhance learning potential and metacognitive strategies, 2) analyze thinking ability particularly on metacognitive strategies of students in the Department of Information and Production Technology Management as a database for choosing suitable learning media, 3) develop a problem based learning with scaffolding to emphasize metacognitive strategies, 4) evaluate the meta-cognitive strategies of the students before and after learning with the developed method, 5) evaluate learning achievement after learning with the developed method, and 6) study satisfaction of learners towards the problem based learning with scaffolding to emphasize metacognitive strategies.
The research procedure can be divided into 5 phases. The 1st phase included the synthesis of learning system by studying the related research and theories to design research framework and the learning model before being validated by the specialists. The 2nd phase, design the system which can be divided into 3 sub-stages, i.e. a) study the meta-cognitive level of learners by metacognitive awareness inventory (MAI) by Schraw and Dennison, 1994. The measurement divided learners into 5 levels for the forecast of the learning trend through WEKA Program. b) The researcher constructed research tool for evaluating knowledge by constructing simulation and problem, evaluation criteria with Rhubric and evaluation for the effectiveness of the system. c) System analysis. The 3rd phase, develop the system by developing website on knowledge management as mentioned in the 2nd phase using PHP language with MySQL Database for storing knowledge from the 2nd phase. The 4th phase was the pilot of the model and validation for IOC on content and technique by the specialists. The 5th phase, the researcher evaluated the effectiveness by analyzing the data with research statistics.
The results showed that : 1) the model synthesized by the researcher namely PBL-MTCS Model has been evaluated by 10 specialists at very high appropriateness (mean = 4.33, SD = 0.48)
2) The evaluation of metacognitive strategies of learners revealed thinking level of students in the Department of Information and Production Technology Management as follows. On the knowledge of cognition, there were 24.6% of students in moderate level and 32.89% at high level. On regulation of cognition, there were 38.24% of students at moderate level and 54.71% at high level. With the result of this aspect, the researcher decided to employ 4 scaffolds, i.e. conceptual, metacognition, strategic and procedural scaffolds to develop metacognitive of learners. 3) The development of PBL method was under the validation by 6 specialists through questionnaires and interview. The specialists reported high appropriateness on the content and technique at mean X ̅ = 4.46 and 4.01 respectively. 4) The implementation on the subject group revealed that after the learning with the developed model, students gained higher metacognition on regulation of cognition on planning from 3.40 to 3.76, monitoring from 3.06 to 3.37, evaluating from 3.43 to 3.75, and revising from 3.58 to 3.87 with the overall improvement from 3.37 to 3.69 at the research statistic significance at 0.01. 5) The learning achievement from the test scores showed significantly higher at the research statistic significance at 0.01 and 6) the learners reported high satisfaction towards the developed model at high level (3.72)
