Abstract: The data collection for this project on tribal medicines was carried out by the author in the Karjat and Dhulia Districts of Maharashtra, India from 1990-1998. More studies in the field were carried out between 2008-2011. Needless to say that rapport building and an understanding of the tribal cultural practices took several months. The major focus of this study was to find out from the Warlies and Kathkaries of Karjat and Bhils of Dhulia Districts respectively, if they had herbal remedies to cure diabetes which is a national problem today. After several field studies along with the tribal medicine men or Bhagats in the jungles, it is interesting to note that they indeed had several remedies to show us. These items were carefully documented and restudied with the experts at the Botanical Survey of India team in Pune that ratified the suggested medicinal plants by the tribal folk. The collections were also reviewed by experts at the Agarkar Institute located in Pune, Maharashtra. The efforts of the tribal folk were complimented by the author and his friends in opening a primary school for the tribal children in Karjat and holding several group meetings with the medicine men so as to review and exchange their herbal knowledge with others who were eager to learn. Some of the interesting findings about the cure for diabetes are presented in the body of the article.
