Perception and Actual Use of Thai EFL Students toward Vocabulary Learning Strategies

Abstract: The purposes of this study were 1) to investigate the students’ perception and their actual use of vocabulary learning strategies, and 2) to look at how learners learn vocabulary and the strategies they use to discover and retain the word meaning. The number of selected samples included 200 twelfth grade students, derived through purposive random sampling. The instruments consisted of vocabulary learning strategy questionnaire, think-aloud vocabulary tasks, and semi-structured interviews. The data analyzing were both quantitative data from the questionnaire, and qualitative data from thing-aloud vocabulary tasks, and the semi-structured interviews. The results for the study were summarized as follows: 1. Most students (84%) favored strategies focusing on contextual guessing when they encountered new words. Some of them (81.5%) reported the dictionary strategies were used to confirm guess and prior knowledge including word futures, context, and world knowledge. 2. The students in the study (70%) tended to study word form to consolidate new words and enhance retention, but most of them (69%) did not systematically keep track of their learning or initiate learning outside the class time. 3. It was found that the high proficient students used similar learning strategies as their counterparts did, but they were more effective in manipulating the strategies. The results suggested that teachers should help learners be aware of their own responsibility in vocabulary learning and expose them to different approaches and strategies in enhancing vocabulary acquisition.
