Abstract:
This study aimed to compare the oral presentation skills of the students before and after using the Cooperative Learning Approach, to investigate the students attitudes toward this approach, and to determine how they manage their responsibilities in groups. The target group was a class of 25 tourism students who studied a course of English for tourism at a private university in the south of Thailand. There were two types of research instruments. The first type used was the teaching instrument, which consisted of 5 lesson plans, using Cooperative Learning approach. The second type used for collecting in-depth data was a pretest and a posttest, questionnaire, semi-structured interviews and classroom observation notes in order to answer three research questions. In order to prevent bias, an inter-rater was invited to be a co-rater in the pre-test and post-test and the after study interview. For data analysis, SPSS program was used to calculate quantitative data (pretest-posttest and questionnaire) and qualitative data, semi-structured interview, and classroom observation, were categorized into appropriate themes. The results indicated that the students showed signs of improvement. The mean score of the pretest from both the teacher (average score 12.32) and the inter-rater (average score 11.88) were compared. The scores showed improvement of oral presentation skills after using this method in terms of presentation management, organization, material, and time, but in terms of language, the students did not show satisfactory development. However, the students had better awareness in the area of using appropriate words and sentences.
