Abstract:
Communication strategies play an important role in communication process. This
independent study aimed at examining and comparing communication strategies used by 75 high
school students, studying in Mattayomsuksa 4-6 at Satit Udomseuksa School in Chon Buri Province.
Also, this study attempted to investigate the subjects level of achievement in using communicative
strategies to describe people and things. The statistical tests used to analyze the collected data
included percentage and means. The results of this study were as follow:
1. The most frequently used communication strategies employed by high school students
was the strategy of Description (51%), followed by the strategies of Literal translation (13%), and
Mime (9%), respectively. The communication strategy was with the lowest frequency by the subjects
was the strategy of Exemplification (5%).
2. Base on the comparison of communication strategy used by high school students, it
was shown that students in Mattayomsuksa 4-6 used the strategy of Description with the highest
frequency (51%). It was also shown that the subjects in each education level used different
communication strategies for the second and the third highest frequencies.
3. Regarding the level of achievement in using communication strategy to describe people
and things, it was found at a high level (71%). Specifically, the students in Mattayomsuksa 5 and
Matthayomsuksa 6 had almost the same level of achievement. However, for the student in
Matthayomsuksa 4, they earned the lowest level of achievement in describing people and things
(68%).
