Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to analyze skills used for solving mathematical word problems which consist of four skills that were problem translation skill, problem integration skill, solution planning and monitoring skill, and solution execution skill. The sample was 413 seventh grade students in schools under the Office of the Basic Education Commission in Secondary Educational Service Area 39 Uttaradit province, which was selected by Multi-stage Random Sampling. The research instrument was the test of skills used for solving mathematical word problems which was constructed by the researcher, with its criterion-related validity of 0.583, the concurrent validity of 0.571, the reliability of 0.877, the difficulty index of 0.27 - 0.84 and the discriminant index of 0.23 - 0.88. The data were analyzed by arithmetic mean, standard deviation, percentage of arithmetic mean, and One-way ANOVA. The results of this research were: 1. When analyzed four skills used for solving mathematical word problems, it turned out that seventh grade students could use problem translation skill the most, the following was solution planning and monitoring skill and they could use solution execution skill the least. When analyzed four skills separated by each group of students, the results were: 1.1 High group could use solution planning and monitoring skill the most, the following was problem translation skill, and they could use problem integration skill the least. 1.2 Moderate group could use problem translation skill the most, the following was solution planning and monitoring skill, and they could use problem integration skill the least. 1.3 Low group could use problem translation skill the most, the following was problem integration skill, and they could use solution execution skill the least. 2. When compared skills used for solving mathematical word problems between groups of students, it turned out that high group could use whole skills used for solving mathematical word problems more than the other groups could use, at the level of significance 0.01. And moderate group could use skills used for solving mathematical word problems more than low group could use, at the level of significance 0.01. When compared each skill used for solving mathematical word problems between groups of students, it turned out that high group could use problem translation skill, problem integration skill, solution planning and monitoring skill, and solution execution skill, more than the other groups could use, at the level of significance 0.01. And moderate group could use for all of four skills more than low group could use, at the level of significance 0.01.
