Abstract:
The purpose of this research were to study the severity of insomnia of schizophrenic patients and relationships among selected factors including age, gender, depressive symptoms, cognitive, positive symptoms, negative symptoms, family relationship, type of anti-psychotic drugs, sleep hygiene practice, and insomnia of schizophrenic patients. The subjects composed of 165 schizophrenic patients with insomnia who were receiving service at the Out Patients Department of Lampang Hospitals, Vachiraphuket Hospitals, Chonburi Hospitals, and Nakhonpathom Hospitals. The research instruments consisted of the personal data record, Insomnia Severity Index, the sleep hygiene behavior, the family relationship questionnaire, the Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia, the Thai Mini-Mental State Examination, the Thai Version of the Positive syndrome scale and the Thai Version of the Negative syndrome scale. All instruments were tested for content validity by professional experts. Reliability of instruments were reported by Cronbachs coefficient alpha as of .90, .71, .90, .96, .85, .76 and .79 respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, Pearsons Product Moment Correlation Coefficient, Eta, and One-way Analysis of Variance. The Major finding were as follows: 1. The severity of insomnia of schizophrenic patients were at the moderated level (mean = 16.13, S.D.= 5.56); 2. Age, gender, depressive symptoms, cognitive, and type of anti-psychotic drugs were significantly related to insomnia of schizophrenic patients at level of .05 (Eta = .538, .561, .594, .209, and .220 respectively); 3. Positive symptoms, negative symptoms and Sleep hygiene were positively correlated to insomnia of schizophrenic patients at level of .05 (r = .378, .193, and .269 respectively); 4. Family relationship were negatively correlated to insomnia of schizophrenic patients at level of .05 (r = -.349) .
