Abstract:
The main objectives of this research were to study the coastal evolution, Iandform characteristics, the natural ecosystem, and the development of tourism activities, industries and ports which affected Chonburi and Rayong coastal plains. The study revealed that Chonburi and Rayong coastal plain had been historically processed by tectonic, Holocene sea level change, and marine processes including waves, longshore currents, and tides, all of which were the agents in the formation of landforms that could be classified into 12 units. The natural ecosystem of almost all landforms had been remarkably changed by tourism activities and industries. In case of tourism activities, Pattaya Beach has been transformed by tourism and recreation, roads, and constructions extending into the sea whereas Suan Son Beach has been less affected. However, shoreline erosion still prevailed resulting in the building of breakwater and sea wall for protection. As for industrial activities and ports, both Laem Chabang and Mab Ta Phut Industrial parks had replaced most of the agricultural area. The construction of deep sea ports resulted in erosion and deposition on both sides of the ports. Consequently, breakwaters were built to alleviate the problems.
