Study on LLDPE/SEBS/Zeolite Y blends for selective ethylene permeation of packaging film
Abstract:
In this research linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE)/polystyrene-ethylene butylene-styrene copolymer (SEBS)/zeolite Y films were prepared to study the improvement of ethylene gas permeation in packaging films. The factors affecting ethylene gas permeation of blends films were studied, including filler types (i.e. zeolite Y with and without modification, silica and calcium carbonate), surface modification of zeolite Y and the filler loadings (5-20% by weight). The effect of ethylene gas concentrations was also investigated. LLDPE/SEBS/filler was compounded using an internal mixer and thereafter films were shaped using compression molding. It was found that the 5%wt filler-filled film gave tensile strength and %elongation at break lower than the blend film without filler. However, the addition of 5%wt zeolite Y could improve ethylene permselectivity of the LLDPE/SEBS blend film. Therefore, the surface of zeolite Y was modified with organosilanes (ethyltrichlorosilane (ETS) and octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS)). It was found that the LLDPE/SEBS incorporation with ETS or OTS-modifiied zeolite Y revealed a better dispersion, resulting in a greater tensile properties and ethylene transmission rate (ETR) as compared with unmodified zeolite Y-filled film. Moreover, the LLDPE/SEBS blend film incorporated with OTS-modified zeolite Y exhibited tensile properties and ETR higher than that of ETS-modified zeolite Y. This is because the long chain alkyl silane had hydrophobicity higher than the short chain one. At higher loadings (5-20%wt), tensile strength of the filler-filled films did not change significantly while percentage of elongation at break decreased. In addition, the best tensile properties were obtained from the LLDPE/SEBS blend film incorporated with OTS-modified zeolite Y in comparison with that of other fillers-filled films. In the effect of ethylene concentrations (5-20%wt), it was found that the LLDPE/SEBS blend film incorporated with 5%wt OTS-modified zeolite Y possessed the high permeation coefficient. Hence, it could be a candidate for packaging film.
