Abstract:
This independent study aimed to investigation the application problems of the Thai Financial Reporting Standard (TFRS) 6, Exploration and Evaluation of Mineral Resources in business sectors. This study also investigated solutions for those problems based on the opinions of accountants, auditors, and academic professionals. The methodological approach of the study was based on a qualitative research method, using data triangulation to verify data collected from primary and secondary source. The study focused on the problems related to measurement, measurement after recognition, impairment, presentation and disclosure of financial statements.
The findings show : (1) some expenses were improperly recorded in the cost of exploration and evaluation of assets; (2) accountants lacked of sufficient knowledge and understanding about the standard due to lacking of clear examples and explanations; (3) using the cost model in the cost of exploration and evaluation assets might affect the reliability of financial statements and decision making of users when significant changes of present value occurred; (4) for the impairment, presentation and disclosure of financial statements, there were no problems found.
According to the research findings, solutions were recommended as follows: (1) academic seminar or training on the expense for exploration and cost assessment of mineral resources should be arranged for the performers to minimize measurement and expenditure problems; (2) accountants should improve themselves in order to understand this standard clearly for accuracy, completeness and reliability of the preparation and presentation of financial statements. This would contribute to the quality improvement of financial statement which was beneficial for users of accounting information in their business decision making.
