Abstract: World Health Organization in 2010 found that the number of deaths from coronary heart disease was approximately 7.2 million, representing 12.2% of all causes of death(1). One of the most important risk factors of coronary heart disease is metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is one of the risk factor of coronary heart disease and associated with atherosclerosis.The study(4) reported that fish oil can improve arterial stiffness and maybe leading to reduction in the frequency of cardiovascular disease development in metabolic syndrome. However some kinds of researches have reported diversely. Objective: To study the effects of fish oil which reduce arterial stiffness in metabolic syndrome subjects. Material and Methods: 50 subjects with metabolic syndrome are random by block randomization into 2 groups, 25 subjects each. The subjects in the first group were assigned to take Omacor 1 g/day and the second group were assigned to take placebo drug after breakfast for 10 weeks. Cardio Ankle Vascular Index (CAVI) were measured at baseline and after 10weeks. Results: the 50 enrolled participants, 45 subjects completed the study. After 10 weeks CAVI decreased from 7.27 ± 0.2 to 7.2 ± 0.2 but show no significantly statistics in fish oil group. After 10 weeks CAVI increased from 7.09 ± 0.2 to 7.14 ± 0.2 in control group. Conclusion: 1 g/day of Fish oil did not improve arterial stiffness in patient with metabolic syndrome.
