Relationships between motivation and attitude on English proficiency of vocational students in Phayao province

Abstract: This study was designed to find out the relationship between motivation and attitude on English proficiency of vocational students in Phayao province. There were 81 populations from the first to the third year of vocational certificate level. There were two instruments in this research, i.e. questionnaire and proficiency test. The questionnaire was used to measure the student’s motivation and attitude based on R.C. Gardner (2004). The proficiency test was modified from Cambridge Key English Test (KET). A correlation analysis was run on the variables in motivation and attitude and student’s proficiency scores. The results found that majority students were moderately motivated (X̅3.35) and had positive attitude towards English learning (X̅ 3.89). They realized the importance of English for their future and occupational purposes (X̅ 3.81). Student’s motivation and expectation were significantly correlated with student’s attitude whereas there were no correlation between student’s motivation and attitude on English proficiency (P > 0.05). In comparing the differences of students’ motivation and attitude between the three groups of students by using one-way ANOVA, the result found that there were not significantly different (P > 0.05). However, the third year students had the highest motivation and positive attitude when comparing to the other two groups by mean scores.
