Perceptual learning styles of vocational education students at Trat Technical College
Abstract:
The objectives of this study were: (1) to investigate the perceptual learning styles of the vocational education students in six programs; (2) to compare the perceptual learning styles of vocational education students from different programs at Trat Technical College. The sample was 170 second-year vocational education students in six diploma programs: Building Construction Technology, Mechanical Technology, Electrical Power Technology, Electronics Technology, Accounting, and Marketing, who enrolled in Developing Skills for English Communication 2 during the first semester of academic year 2012. The research instrument used in collecting the data were a five-point Likert scale questionnaire adopted from Reid's Perceptual Learning Styles Preference Questionnaire (Reid 1995). The quantitative data were analyzed using the descriptive statistics of arithmetic mean and standard deviation, and inferential statistics of One-Way ANOVA at the level of 0.05. The results of the study revealed that students in six programs preferred Group, Kinesthetic and Auditory learning styles as their Major learning styles, while Visual, Tactile and Individual learning styles were chosen as their Minor learning styles. In addition, the total level of perceptual learning styles in six programs indicated that the students' perceptual learning styles were in the Minor learning style level. The results from One-Way ANOVA analysis indicated that the statistical significant differences were found according to Perceptual Learning Styles at the level of 0.05 in five programs: Building Construction Technology (p = .019*), Electrical Power Technology (p = .001*), Electronics Technology (p = .002*), Accounting (p = .001*), and Marketing (p = .011*). However, there was no statistical significant difference of students' perceptual learning styles in Mechanical Technology (p = .113).
