Abstract:
Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of rosehip powder 3 grams per day versus astaxanthin 4 milligrams per day on crows feet wrinkles, skin moisture and elasticity.
Method: The doubleblind study included 34 healthy subjects, age 35-65 years with crows feet. Subjects were randomized to receive either three grams of rosehip powder or four milligrams of astaxanthin twice daily for eight weeks. Objective measurements of wrinkles, skin moisture and elasticity were assessed by using visioscan, corneometer and cutometer at the beginning of the study, after four weeks and after eight weeks. Evaluation of the participants satisfaction and determination of the adverse reactions of both supplements were assessed at the end of the study. Significance of all values was attained with p < 0.05.
Results: 33 subjects were completed study. (One subject from rosehip powder group dropped out because of botulinum toxin injection). There were statistically significant improvements in crows feet wrinkles, skin moisture and elasticity after taken for 8 weeks in both groups. Comparing the effectiveness between rosehip powder and astaxanthin, there was no significant difference. Also, participants satisfaction showed no significant difference in favour of the treatment. 5.88% of subjects in rosehip powder group (1 subject) experienced nausea. No treatment-related side effects were reported in astaxanthin group.
Conclusion: The study results suggest that administration of rosehip powder was equally effective as astaxanthin in improving skin aging signs. Alternatively, it may be used as a supplement for the skin.
