Abstract:
The research aimed to study 1) the preliminary elements, the learning elements and the achievement of mathematics learning of the lower high school students under Ubon Ratchathani municipality; 2) the relation between the elements in question and 3) the influence of the preliminary elements which affected the mathematics learning of the lower high school students in the study.
The samples used in the research were 248 lower high school students under Ubon Ratchathani Municipality, derived by a stratified random sampling. The research instruments were a test for the achievement of mathematics learning and a test for the preliminary elements of the students. The former had a difficulty value ranging from .21-.79, a discrimination value ranging from .22-.62 and a confidence value equivalent to .75. The latter had a confidence value equivalent to .81. Statistics used in data analysis were percentage, mean, standard deviation, Chi-square, Pearsons correlation coefficient and multiple regression analysis.
The research findings were as follows:
1. The mathematics learning achievement of the lower high school
students under Ubon Ratchathani Municipality was mainly moderate.
2. The students preliminary elements: spare time as used in the
schools and during the vacation, residences, distances between the residences and
the schools were related to the mathematics learning of the lower high school
students with a statistical significance of .05.
3. There were six variables influencing the mathematics learning of the
students in the study: use of a spare time in the schools (reading books or surfing the
Internet), distance between the residence and the schools (not longer than
one kilometer), daily earning (51-100 bath), parents occupation ( personal business),
distance (6-9 kilometers), family members (4-5). All variables could explain by 15% a
variance of a mathematics learning achievement of the lower high school students. A
standard error in prediction was equivalent to 6.26.
4. A predictive equation of the mathematics learning achievement of
the lower high school students can be illustrated in the form of raw scores and
standard scores as follows:
The raw scores
Yˆ = 23.15 + 3.02 X23 3.99 X40 + 2.15X11 2.66X9 2.63X42 +1.63X29
The standard scores
zˆ = .20Z23 - .23Z40 + .16Z11 - .17Z9 - 19Z42 + .13Z29
