Abstract:
Water is very important to human daily life. Human beings use water for transporting, for
drinking and etc. With the continuously increasing number of population, water has become even
more important, and it can be easily polluted. To maintain the quality of water for use, some
properties of the water have to be qualified for a variety of usage. For example, the pH level of
the water is maintained for agriculture, the dissolved oxygen level has to be maintained for fish or
shrimp farming, or the amount of Ammonia Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Chlorophyll, or some
organics, such as Coliform Bacteria has to be limited for drinking.
This thesis has proposed a water quality monitoring system to monitor the level of
dissolved oxygen using wireless sensor networks for shrimp farm. The system is composed of
Tmote Sky wireless sensor node connected with the Dissolved Oxygen (DO) probe. The proposed
system measures and records the level of DO and the temperature of the water in the shrimp farm
into a database. The system will monitor and warn farmers if the level of the DO is too low for
shrimp breeding. The system can also be remotely monitored by operator over a Web system. The
Web system shows the level of DO in form of tables or graphs for easy monitoring.
