Abstract:
The aims of this research were to synthesize the occupational standard of Thailand hotel
industry for the housekeeper groups, to conduct the training modules for the housekeepers, and
the competent assessment manual for the housekeepers. The hotel industry has been playing the
major roles to the world economy, especially in the Asian Pacific area. In Thailand, tourism and
hospitality are in the top ten industries ranking which has brought much income to the country. It
also has an influence to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) as well as the proportion of hiring the
room service staff who are the main personnel in the hotel industry. However, there are problems
about the quality of the housekeepers in the hotels, for instance to develop their occupational
standard for housekeepers under the competent assessment system and the training modules in
order to reach the world hotel service standard.
The eight steps of this research were as follows: 1) to determine design and research
process using the process of occupational standard and other research document. 2) The
occupational standard of Thailand hotel industry for the housekeeper groups were drafted. 3) The
occupational standard for the housekeeper groups was made by 18 hotel experts using Functional
Analysis. 4) The competent curriculum for the housekeepers was made. 5) The training modules
of room service for the housekeepers under the occupational standard were arranged. 6) The
experiment, the assessment and the training modules of room service were used. 7) The manual
and the occupational competent assessment for the housekeeper groups were developed. 8) The experiment of the training modules of room service for the housekeepers under the occupational
standard was summarized.
The outcomes of the research were analyzed by the functions comprising key objectives,
8 key roles, 7 key functions, 17 competency units, and 48 elements, The development of
competency curriculum for the housekeepers was in line to the occupational standard of the
workplace. The competency based training modules and the guests rooms were classified for 5
sets of elements : trolley arrangement, cleaning of the guests rooms , bed-making , cleaning of
toilets, and mini-bar arrangement. The assessments of the modules were the knowledge test, the
performance test, the observation, the interview and the working evidence. The assessment
manual of room service for the housekeeper groups had 3 types which were the direct assessment,
the indirect assessment and the assessment from other support. Besides the hotel experts
addressed that the training modules and the assessment manual could be developed for the hotel
staff at the highest level. Moreover, the trainees said that the training modules and assessment
manual assisted them to develop their occupational competence and to increase their ability to
work efficiently and confidently. They had the good quality and standard of their work in order
that they had the real target and the clear guidelines to develop self-occupational competence
continuously.
